Because, my friends, I don’t think we talk enough about how the elusive clarity we’re all seeking in our business comes from the messiness of being IN the market. From testing things out, getting it wrong and iterating on what we learn. Again and again.

Silicon Valley goes on and on about the value of failing fast, which is a brilliant incentive for testing as early as possible. But it often devolves into burning quickly through VC funding on the premise of learning what doesn’t work.

As self-funded business owners, we don’t have the luxury of that kind of messiness! So I’m all about failing smart, not fast.

After over 16 years in marketing, working with Fortune 500 corporations, national US consumer brands, startups, NGOs, local businesses and soloprenerus, I know that inefficiency is the #1 enemy of self-funded businesses.
